Specific Marine (Cargo) Insurance

Cover for a single consignment by road, rail, sea or air.

A container ship loaded with cargo

Goods are exposed to accidents, theft, fire and handling damage while in transit. A specific marine policy covers one named consignment from dispatch to destination. It suits businesses that ship occasionally; regular shippers usually save with an open policy, which we can also arrange.

Who needs it

  • Traders and manufacturers sending goods within India
  • Importers and exporters, depending on the Incoterm agreed
  • Businesses shipping high-value one-off consignments

What's covered

All risks (ICC A)

The widest cover: physical loss or damage from any external cause, except exclusions.

Named perils (ICC B / C)

Cheaper cover for listed events such as fire, collision, sinking or overturning.

Inland transit

Road and rail transit within India, including loading and unloading where included.

Strikes, riots and war

Available as extensions.

What's not covered

We show you the catch before you buy. Common exclusions (exact terms vary by insurer and plan):

  • Insufficient or unsuitable packing
  • Delay, loss of market and inherent vice of the goods
  • Wilful misconduct of the insured
  • Insolvency of the carrier or ship owner

Popular add-ons

Warehouse-to-warehouse extension

Cover from the seller's warehouse to the buyer's, not just port to port.

Frequently asked questions

Who should insure: buyer or seller?

It depends on the Incoterm. Under CIF the seller insures; under FOB or FCA the buyer usually does. We can check your contract.

Specific policy or open policy?

A specific policy covers one consignment. If you ship regularly, an open policy covers all shipments for a year, usually at a better rate and with less paperwork.
